JUNE’S TOPIC: Search Firm Owner Spotlight: Kent Burns, Owner of Simply Driven Executive Search

After earning an Accounting Degree from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, Kent Burns spent the first 15 years of his career working in Big Four public accounting and corporate accounting/finance. He transitioned into recruiting in 1999 with Management Recruiters International.  While at MRI, he became National Account Executive of the Year in 2003.  Eventually, he became an owner-operator of that MRI franchise, which was consistently ranked in the Top 10 Nationally during his tenure.

Kent founded in Simply Driven in 2013 based on the concept of “Why”, and his desire to create a different type of recruiting firm culture focused on improving lives. Whose lives?  The lives of the candidates they represent, the lives of the leaders that hire them, and the lives of the people who work for Simply Driven.  He believes that culture is horizontal gravity – it’s the reason people join an organization, and it’s why they stay there.  Long-term success of the employment relationship is based on mutual alignment of purpose and meaning amongst the people involved. That purpose and meaning is rooted in “Why.”

Shortly after launching Simply Driven, and with a strong desire to grow and scale the business, he joined forces with Sanford Rose Associates.  Since then, Simply Driven has grown from “Kent, his iPhone and his Mac” to a team of six with four distinct practice areas – Robotics & Automation, Point-of-Sale Retail, Information Technology and Accounting/Finance.  Kent also made an important decision to add contract/interim placement, and has grown that area from zero to $500,000 annual margin in less than two years. Join us as Kent shares what he’s learned, what advice he would give, and mistakes to avoid as you seek to solidify the foundation of your firm.
