FEBRUARY’S TOPIC: Search Firm Owner Spotlight Interview: Sean Gill, Owner of Conexus

Sean was born and raised in the great state of Michigan. After earning an Economics degree in college, Sean worked as a CPA for Deloitte in Detroit and Moscow, and then relocated to California to work in Audit and Finance for The Walt Disney Company. He transitioned into Recruiting in 1999, originally working for a national firm where he became a top producer and then the Regional Manager for Southern California.

Sean founded Conexus in January 2012 with the vision of building a new firm whose model was ideally suited to meet the needs of his top clients. Initially, Conexus had a “Rainmaker” model – Sean brought in most of the business and he had a couple strong people working for him to pipeline candidates. Things were going well, but after many years as a big biller, Sean wanted to shift his approach to migrate from a rainmaker model to building a more solid foundation as a scalable search firm. After attending an NLE owners conference in 2016, he realized he would benefit from partnering with a team to assist him. In 2017, Sean joined SRA, engaged a coach, started outsourcing several critical areas necessary for growth, and made a commitment to focus less “in” the business and more “on” the business.  From 2017 to 2018, revenues grew 20%; from 2018 to 2019, they grew another 20%. Over the last few years, Conexus has focused on hiring and training new people, launched a second practice area, and is looking to launch a third. More importantly, while the firm has been growing steadily, Sean’s personal production has gone from 60% of the firm’s overall revenue to 27%, and Conexus continues to put the right building blocks in place to sustain the firm’s growth. Join us as Sean shares what he’s learned, what advice he would give, and mistakes to avoid as you seek to make 2020 the best year yet for your firm.
